Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Pavilion on Thursday, June 29 at 11 a.m., on the campus. The state-of-the-art structure is the only one of its kind in North Carolina.

North Carolina Department of Public Safety Secretary Eddie M. Buffaloe Jr. will be the ceremony’s keynote speaker. There will also be a live drone demonstration at the event.

The university broke ground on the complex in January 2022. It is located adjacent to Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, and other military facilities in southeast Virginia, the Tidewater and the Albemarle region. ECSU’s UAS Pavilion allows for opportunities in UAS education, research and training, and develops careers for individuals with interest in a diverse range of occupations from public safety, disaster response and homeland security to healthcare and agriculture.

ECSU offers the only four-year Aviation Science and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) degree programs in North Carolina. The Aviation Science program’s three areas of specialization include: Flight Education; Aviation Management; and Professional Aeronautics. Enrollment in the program totals more than 180 students, with a nearly 60 percent minority student population. Further, ECSU is accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABInternational).
