BALTIMORE, MD. – Following a passionate, fast-paced game, the Lady Vikings endured a tough 64-59 loss to the Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos.
While the Lady Vikings dominated their opponents in the total number of rebounds – 49 –it was turnovers and FSU’s ability to take advantage to the tune of 23 points, which proved to be the team’s downfall.
“We had too many turnovers against a quality team. They capitalized off that and they won the game,” Coach Tynesha Lewis said in the after-game presser.
Despite the turnovers, the Lady Vikings did a lot of things right – including having four players in double figures including Alanis Hill with 16 points and Rashauna Grant, the only player in the game to complete a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The other two players who scored double figures –NyAsia Blango and Rasheka Simmons joined Lewis on the podium and expressed their disappointment with the loss and their admiration for their coach.
“It definitely didn’t turn out how we wanted, but it was a great run,” Blango said. “I’m proud of my teammates. Everyone whose number was called tonight stepped up. We just fell short in the end.”
For Simmons, this loss feels more personal as she transferred to ECSU from FSU for reasons she cares not to discuss. She did, however, discuss the gratitude she has for her teammates and coach in their run up to the title game.
“Viking Pride is real. The support was real. They welcomed me with open arms, so I’m really grateful for that,” she said.
