ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (March 21, 2024) – The Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will host its second annual ‘Celebrating Our Sheroes’ event Thursday, March 21 at 3:30 p.m. at Great Hall.

The event serves as a tribute to all women, and particularly those at ECSU, during Women's History Month, which is celebrated nationally in March. Earlier this month, campus faculty and staff nominated women throughout the university who they feel are examples of legacy, leadership, and community.

“Honoring the contributions that women have made on campus, and in the community at large, is important for a number of essential reasons that are far reaching,” said Tiffany Hinton, assistant vice chancellor and chief diversity officer. “This moment is to reflect on the accomplishments and challenges of women in diverse fields and spaces.”

As part of the event, nominees who’re selected will be acknowledged and awarded certificates. The event also includes a panel discussion on the social and societal issues women face, event organizers said.

ECSU will also commemorate Women’s History Month with the Community Connections Performance and Lecture series “Don’t Touch My Pen: Continuing the Tradition of Women’s Poetic Voices.” It will feature North Carolina poet laureate Jaki Shelton Green, poetry slam champion Ayanna Albertson and professional spoken word artist and Piedmont poet laureate Dasan Ahanu. Admission is free but registration is required on the event site.

“We are taking advantage of every opportunity to highlight women’s voices. Events like this allow our campus community to come together in celebration and reflection towards a more equitable future for all individuals,” Hinton said. “It is important to celebrate, honor, and reflect on so many who sacrifice daily to uplift our campus community and beyond.”
